Fusion Bonding is the result of a manufacturing innovation that occurred in the mid-1960's. Development of the fusion bonding technology provided a great styling improvement in carpet tile over the needlepunch method. Fusion bonding created the first tile product to have a traditional, plush, cut-pile appearance like that of woven velvets. This innovation was very important to the development of the carpet tile market, as it began to set new standards for carpet tile appearance and performance. It paved the way for carpet tile's acceptability in the more demanding American marketplace. By the 1990's, the tufting method had improved significantly and offered a wider range of surface appearances, rivaling woven carpeting in its patterning capabilities. As a result, fusion bonding, in commercial carpet applications at least, slowly lost its foothold in the industry. |
