Sustainability | Seven Fronts for Sustainability1. Eliminate wasteFrom design to functionality, our new Entropy® loop-pile carpet is inspired by nature. Based on biomimicry, Entropy carpet tiles are infinitely adaptable, with the capability to be installed and replaced randomly. This natural patterning provides near-zero installation waste, and makes Entropy easier to repair, adapt and reuse. 2. Eliminate harmful emissionsIn 2003 Interface partnered with Invista to launch Cool Carpet, a program that offsets the greenhouse gas emissions that result throughout a carpet's life cycle through participation in various environmental projects. All emissions projects are validated by Climate Neutral Network, a third party certifier. That same year several Interface products earned certification as Environmentally Preferred Products, making Interface the first commercial carpet manufacturer to do so. Interface's EPP certification was awarded by Scientific Certification Systems, a third party evaluator, after a rigorous evaluation process that examines each phase of a product's life cycle. 3. Use only renewable energyInterface Flooring Systems uses photovoltaic (PV) panels to power portions of its manufacturing facilities. At our LaGrange, Georgia carpet tile facility, a PV array generates electricity equivalent to that needed to power one loom. 4. Create closed loop processesDesign for the future, not just the present. Interface actively "mines" discarded flooring materials to manufacture its recycled vinyl backing, taking responsibility for others' abandoned products, and giving new life to old resources. 5. Minimize moving people and materialTo save energy and reduce fossil fuel emissions produced during transportation, Interface increasingly "ships" designs electronically to worldwide manufacturing points closer to installation locations. Interface also mitigates fuel emissions by contributing to the planting of one tree for every 2000 miles of employee air travel through participation with a Trees for Travel program through the company called Trees for the Future. Since October 1997, Interface, Inc. has donated money to plant more than 30,000 trees. 6. Integrate sustainability into our cultureThree-quarters of Interface Flooring Systems employees have been trained in sustainability principles. A workforce focused on the efficient use of financial, environmental, and human capital becomes an advocate for the sustainability of our customers' floorcovering investments. 7. Pioneer new business models of sustainabilityOur Interface reclamation program evaluates and processes used carpet, even that of our competitors, to responsibly give it a second life. Through maintenance, reuse, repurposing or recycling, Interface leads the industry in avoiding permanent disposal of carpet. In fact, if Interface reclaims your carpet, it can guarantee it won't end up in a landfill.
