Interface Showroom Achieves LEED-CI Platinum
Atlanta flagship space to showcase all Interface brands.

What: Interface’s first showroom in Atlanta, home to Interface, Inc., and the company’s first true retail showroom. The showroom is part of the pilot LEED-CI (Commercial Interiors) program, awarded a Platinum designation.

Where: Located at the corner of Spring and Fifth Streets in newly-revitalized Midtown Atlanta, an area becoming more dense with urban residents. The Centergy One building houses a mix of retail (think Starbuck’s and L.A. Fitness) and technology, including Georgia Tech’s Business School and high tech incubation labs.

Who: Both retail and design industry customers have access to the Interface family of brands, including:

Interface Flooring Systems – the company’s flagship brand of modular, commercial carpet.
Bentley Prince Street – fashion-forward, broadloom for the commercial market.
InterfaceFLOR – the company’s first consumer brand of modular carpet which includes the industry’s first product made from natural corn fiber.

When: Opened Spring 2004.

Design: The space is open and modern as a neutral backdrop to showcase the product. Because different brands are being showcased, it was important to have design elements to visually distinguish the showroom areas. Elements include:

  • Three huge ceiling-hung polycarbonate lamp shades, each more than 11 feet in diameter.
  • At the far end of the showroom, the lamp shade has a sheer curtain that can drop to the floor and enclose the space for meetings, product displays or even for entertainment during a showroom function.
  • Distinctive flooring will further define each brand’s space.

Some of the features contributing to the LEED-CI criteria include:

Site selection: Access to public transportation, mixed-use urban redevelopment and a new building with a variety of tenants.
Water efficiency: Low-flow, automatic sinks and toilets; low-flow dishwasher, kitchen sink and ice maker.
Energy & Atmosphere: Floor to ceiling windows along the street maximize daylight and access to views. Lighting is all energy-efficient metal halide and fluorescent. Lighting controls provide for task appropriate lighting at individual work stations and a variety of lighting options throughout the showroom for display purposes. A photovoltaic cell and timer monitors the exterior daylight and adjusts electrical lighting accordingly; auto shut-off sensors operate at the end of the business day and in all non-occupied spaces such as closets. Interface purchases green power and supports non-fossil-fuel based energy.
Materials & Resources: 92% of construction waste was diverted from landfills; LEED-CI standards call for up to 75%. 30% of furniture and fixtures are reused.
Indoor Environmental Quality: CO2 monitoring system that encompasses the entire floor, not just the showroom. Low VOC adhesives and sealants, paint, composite wood and furniture and furnishings. Minimized VOCs during construction. Daylight contributes to IEQ.
